Cakewal 9.x used to ship with something called "virtual keyboard" which
does exactly what you want. I do not know ifity is available ith Sonar.

However, James Bowden's Quick Windows Sequencer has a similar virtual
keyboard. The program is free, and is available at:

Subject: [ddots-l] playing midi with computer keyboard

Imagine the scene. I am stranded in a house without a midi keyboard.
Yes, I know, frightening isn't it? I have lots of softsynths and so I
want to know whether I can use my keyboard on my laptop to make music.
Does anyone do this and how o how do they do it?

Thank you
