If you have DBT 12.5, go to Help, select the Index tab and enter the Keyword
“apostrophes”.
This should bring up a Topic titled “Distinguishing Quotes and Apostrophes for
Braille”.
After that, it is worth looking up the Index for “Unicode” under which is a
topic titles “Entry into *dxp files”. My apologies here as it appears I have
not added appropriate Alt Text. It should have read, “Example shows text
"Calculate: 12 [division sign] 2" where you would enter the unicode value 00F7
and click OK. A division sign will then appear in your Duxbury text.”
The command Ctrl + [ brings up a new feature (which we forget to mention in
What’s New?) and allows you to enter Unicode values in to DBT’s files prior to
translation.

Happy as always to receive critical feedback from global experts! I know of the
changes from ICEB on the apostrophe and always thought them appropriate.
Doubling Susan's perspective we know we can't rely on software to do all things
for us. This only means we still have to know the proper rules, even as
software seems to demand we focus on it and its idiosyncrasies instead.
Best,

Well said Susan.

We have recorded the processes listed as macros. One of the most useful as a
sighted transcriber is the use of colour to highlight the different characters
which helps to determine if the correct symbol has been used in Word to ensure
accurate translation in DBT.

Subject: [duxuser] Re: Beware The Apostrophe
The root cause of this problem is that English print does not use different
characters for an apostrophe and for the semantically distinct right single
quote whereas English braille does. This statement is true whether or not
the print document is using so-called "smart" quotes. The solution requires
identifying the print semantics but there are not to my knowledge any
algorithms that can always correctly do so. There are various heuristics
that work fairly well. It should be feasible to develop a simple app that
could be applied to a print document that works rather like a spell checker
in that it saves human time by only querying a human when it is uncertain.
