The complaint about the EA contraction is not that it crosses syllables. The complaint is that it crosses syllables in such a way as to affect pronunciation. We wouldn't use the er contraction in "imagery" or the the contraction in "motheaten", or the sh contraction is "disharmony". EA cannot be used for obvious reasons at the beginning or end of words. It has already lost a use in favor of the AR contraction which is much more easily legible. The space it saves is insignificant considering that we have now given up on hyphenating words so that long compound words like second-in-command transfer themselves to a new line unless they completely fit on the line above. Let me not stray into any other topics. My point is that the EA contraction creates many more problems than it solves in too many cases and that the rules which prop it up don't match the rest of the BANA rules governing pronunciation.
