I find it depends how it’s entered! Sometimes if I have spaced before, to give
a negative number, it looses the dot 5, but not all the time. But I do find
mathtype more reliable than using Unicode for the minus in the main document.
This plays even more tricks at times!

less than signs are not translated at all but instead are replaced by a
number 227.
