[duxuser] Numbering in Styles

Hello to all:
I am attempting to supplement the Duxbury styles in order to add styles
from the XML docbooks DTD. The more I dig into this, the more daunting
it seems. However, that's part of the fun too, right? I mention this
only to provide some context for the following question, and for several
future questions. If, at some point, the finer details of XML
conversion are more specific than this list can tolerate, I hope the
list moderator will let me know this.
Also, I'm not the most experienced Duxbury user. So, I won't be the
slightest bit offended to be referred to pieces of documentation for
further study or answers.
Ok, numbering. Is there a code, or some other way, to set a number and
then later increment it when a style is encountered during translation?
The style I'm thinking about for this question is <chapter>. When
rendered in the final print-out, of course <chapter> has a number next
to it that would be nice to emulate in the braille translation.
A related consideration may be the relationship between an XML file and
the style sheet(s) it uses. I'm unclear what the philosophy may be
within braille translation about trying to emulate the CSS through
Duxbury itself. Any comments about this would probably be quite
helpful.
Thanks very much.
Chris
