20 or more years of repairing and maintaining braille embossers from manufacturers including E.T., Index and Theil, and I can assure you that trying to get double-sided (Interpoint) braille out of a single-sided embosser is risky at best. Braille dots are generally approximately 2.5 millimeters appart. That's about point zero one of an inch in old money. (Well at least it is old money here in Europe as we've gone metric.) At their base on paper, a braille dot is about 1 millimeter in diameter - about point zero four of an inch. In order to achieve true and accurate interpoint braille, having produced side one, you have to re-insert the paper into the embosser in such a way that it is off-set point zero zero 5 of an inch (1.25 millimeters) vertically and horizontally. With sight, and tremedous care, it is possible to do this. However, all it takes is the very slightest snag in the paper, and a movement of just one hundredth of an inch, and front and back dots are touching each other. And if you have an embosser which uses pins, as opposed to a positive and negative anvil, and there is a risk that a pin may get stuck in the reverse side of a braille dot, get stuck there, and not only tear the paper, but bend the print when it line feeds. We have fast pin type single-sided embossers which cost around $30,000 each, and a pin change can cost a fortune. Trust me guys - I'm neither a lawyer nor a dentist. I have heard that some will do this but do not recall just now. Contact me off list if you need further help. Merci! Khan Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 12:27 PM To: Duxuser Subject: [duxuser] Printing call cards with print and Braille using duxbury I have received a request about making call cards with both print and Brailleand would like advice on doing this. For example, where can I access continuous card stock to print two cards across and 7 or 8 down. To do the inkprint part of the process will probably mean using a dot matrix printer but is there a facility in DBT to braille each card? Alternatively, is there a company in the USA where this can be done at a reasonable cost? Another alternative is to have some sort of seal so that when it is placed over a card and depressed the Braille will be reproduced. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Francis Khan
