Susie, I am going to paste in a copy of something I wrote a while back after struggling with the question of placement of styles after highlighting text. It may help you understand why Ann's solution worked: it assures that the highlighting does not include the final line ending or carriagle return. A word of warning, first, about a problem I ran into when modifying a style (list and outline). List style should be a linear, not nestable style. When you modify it, if you rename yours, be sure to include the period at the end of the name, so that the program will treat your version correcly. I think I've got it figured out. If you're applying a nestable style like "compinline" or "box," the begin- and end-style codes go immediately before and after the text that you've highlighted (selected). With linear styles like "para.", "list.", "h1.", etc. (any with a period at the end), the beginning code will be placed right after the carriage return, end line command, or ending code of another linear style that precedes the highlighted text. The ending code will go just before the next [<], [l], or opening linear style code AFTER what's highlighted. In fact, you don't even have to highlight anything. The cursor can just be anywhere in the "paragraph" you want, and the style you select is applied to the whole section between carriage returns, etc. I used to have trouble when trying to apply a heading style to text after a print page break in a textbook. I'd put in the [lea] code and print page number, then a heading, which I wanted in the h1. or h2. style. The opening style code would end up before the [lea] command. Now I know I should put the line end code [l] after the page number, and it works correctly. (A carriage return after the page number gives an unwanted skipped line.) Hoping this helps, Lynn -----Original Message----- From: duxuser-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:duxuser-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, April 22, 2003 8:18 AM To: duxuser@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [duxuser] Re: Styles Hi Susie I've experienced the very thing you are talking about. Here's what I did to solve it. I put my cursor on the first letter of the text to be included in the style. I highlighted the text and then I continued to hold down my shift key while using the left arrow key to move back to the last letter that was highlighted, which would, of course, un-highlight that letter. I then moved the right arrow, continuing to hold down the shift key in order to get that last letter highlighted. Then I applied the style. This sounds very tedious but once you get the hang of it, you can do it quickly and avoid the frustration you had yesterday. Sometimes the style codes insert themselves in the midst of other code activity and that is what will cause havoc. Ann Foxworth, Computer Braille Specialist Texas Commission for the Blind 4800 N. I am running into a problem that I hope George or Steve or one of you gurus can help me with. I am dealing with a lengthy document in which I am trying to use list style and H1 and H2. When I try to highlight the text that goes into the H1 heading, for example, the codes are inserted in the wrong place. When I try to apply the list style, which I have modified a little to suit myself, the beginning of list code gets put in right, but the [ee~list] shows up at the end of the first list item, rather than at the end of the list. I went through yesterday and manually forced all these style codes, but when I embossed the thing half of them didn't work. In the end I used [ptys], [hds/hde] and [ind5] for my headings and hanging indents, but that is tedious. So is manually forcing all those style codes. Is there a bug that is causing Duxbury not to put the codes where I have requested them? If you highlight the line you want to appear as H2, shouldn't the codes flank that line? Am I missing something elementary here? (no doubt!) Thanks for any and all help. I was feeling awfully smug that I had discovered and learned how to use styles, and now this disaster!
