Tom,
A backup copy of
braille.dot is located in the \Duxbury\Templates folder and may be
COPIED to the correct location if braille.dot is not automatically
installed, or if braille.dot becomes corrupted.
Itâs important to understand where the braille.dot template should be
located. When DBT installs braille.dot, it is placed in the same folder
as normal.dot (Wordâs default template). Usually Wordâs templates are
found in the following folder:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<owner>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
Windows 2000: C:\Documents and Settings\<owner>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
Windows 98: C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
Note: In Windows XP and 2000, the <owner> portion of the path
will be different for each computer. Usually there are at least three
folders in Documents and Settings, and it will be necessary to
determine which folder is the correct one--although you will be able to
navigate as far as Microsoft in all of them, there should be only one
Templates folder.
You can also find out the path in Word, by going to Tools | Options
(Alt+T, O) and selecting the File Locations tab. Select User locations
and click the Modify (Alt+M) button. Now click on the drop-down list
for the current folder, and note the path for the templates.
If you canât find this folder in Windows Explorer, it will be necessary
to set the computer to show hidden files and folders. Open Windows
Explorer, and navigate to Tools | Folder Options (Alt+T, O). Select the
View tab. Click on the Show hidden files and folders radio button.
You should now be able to find the Word templates via Windows Explorer.
Make sure you do not copy braille.dot to the C:\â\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup folder, as this will create problems. An
easy way to make sure it is not there, is to go to Wordâs Tools |
Templates and Add-ins (Alt+T, I) dialog. The braille.dot template must
NOT appear in the Global templates and add-ins (Alt+G) list. If for
some reason is does appear, highlight braille.dot and click the Remove
(Alt+R) button.
Once you know the braille.dot template is in the correct location,
refer back to the DBT Help for "Word Template (BANA)" for further
information on using the template.

Sometimes agency tech people who install DBT will over-ride the default.
How you "get" to the braille template is dependent on your version of Word. Check out DBTs help for specific info on the template. Navigate to Help | Help Topics. This should open with the Contents tab active. Towards the bottom of the list is an entry for "Word Template (BANA)". "Using the Braille Template" gives specific information for Word 2000, 2002 (XP), and 2003.
If you find the template is not installed, let me know, and I'll tell you how to install it.
