Oops left out one vital step. You've got to press Alt+m (to reveal more
search options) before pressing Alt+e if you haven't already done so.

To find Tabs in Word use the code '^t' in the Find What box, without the
quotes.

Pressing Alt+e while in the Find and Replace box will give you a list of
other special symbols you can search for.
