Derry opened, overcome with a triumphant declaration that Cork had beaten
Kerry twice last Saturday and Sunday.
On a lighter note, Martin Kelly reported on his visit to the gallery on
Wednesday at 4 pm where Clare Mclaughlin declared that the humble banana has
radiation in it! She proceeded to generate a vibration on a Geiger counter
that induced a musical creation on a Tibetan Bowl.
Moving swiftly on, Pat Walsh reported that he had difficulty using JAWS to
find the four digit pin that NCBI was waiting for so that they could initiate
a TeamViewer session. Paul checked and reassured the meeting that JAWS calls
out the pin in TeamViewer.
After some discussion it was recommended that JAWS tandem might be used as a
viable alternative.
Pat also sought support from the meeting for accessing BookShare on the NCBI
web site. As nobody present was using this service, Pat was disappointed.
Paul reported that when he tried to use the SMS app on his iPhone, he found
that he could not open the edit area of the message body and that the
onscreen keyboard was overlying the area without letting him use it. Martha
recommended that he use screen recording to make a visual record of the
screen and the keystrokes and gestures which he is making to try to solve the
problem. This can then be shared with skilled, sighted help. She and Ken
explained that, to do this, Video Recording must be turned on in Control
Panel and Ken demonstrated this by recording his actions while turning on
YouTube on his iPad.
Pat McCarthy sought volunteers to assist Ruchi Palan in her project to
establish a team of testers to assess the accessibility of different
web-based applications.
Martha objected to paying Bank fees for the use of bank staff to assist in
activities that are inaccessible to non-visual usage. The discussion revealed
that Blind customers were exempted along with OAPs but that that relief has
now been lifted. Pat McCarthy invited people to contact Ciara Drain at
ciara.m.drain@xxxxxx to see if any solution can be found to remove the access
charges.
This prompted a lengthy discussion during which it was revealed that along
with Banks, The Post Office, and State savings services all impose charges
that are in danger of eating away at personal savings. Martha pointed out
that Mortgage holders are exempt from Bank charges. All regretted the loss of
the free banking for blind customers available in the past.
Martha had a problem in which her iPhone kept losing its connection with the
network. She is using her unlimited data allocation because there is no WIFI
connectivity in her rural area. She could only resolve this by turning off
the iPhone and restarting it. The group felt that this was probably clearing
the cache so that more memory could be made available to her connection. Ken
recommended a software reset of the iPhone. To do this, the user has to
press the Volume up key once, then the volume down key once followed by a
long press of the power button until the Apple logo appears (It was suggested
that a count of 7 would be sufficient since a non-visual user cannot tell if
the Apple logo has appeared!).
On testing the internet speed currently available Ken advised downloading the
FreeTest app for this purpose.
Jackie described an unsatisfactory experience testing a device called "Buzz
Clip" which is worn on the front of the body. The beam is very narrow and
failed to detect overhead branches at head height. The device also failed to
report road crossing signal poles until she was right there at the pole. The
price of the unit is €180 but one would need multiple units to cover all the
obstacles that could be encountered on the street. As a guide dog user,
Jackie found the device to be completely useless.
