The lively Cork meeting braced itself to deal with the many stories of
corruption on almost every front.
Pat made valiant efforts to send an uncorrupted URL to the FB-Exchange list
without success. The issue is tangled up in the dilemma of character encoding
and the format of messages in text or HTML or a combination of both.
Initial work-arounds have been reported in previous meetings. Sadly, the
steps to resolve those difficulties are frustrated by slight changes in the
operating system and in newer versions of email programs.
What is clear, is that emails containing links on the iPhone often appear in
Outlook or web mail on the PC as plain text showing the originating as
corrupted text or showing the original HTML code which is difficult for an
untrained, non-programmer, to read and understand. The resulting email is
meaningless to its recipient.
Victoria is looking for help with Visual studio as a tool for coding in
Python and other languages. It was recommended that she turn to Google for
guidance on accessible solutions found by other users of MVBA.

This NVDA add-on provides fixes and improvements mostly for the editor
component of the Microsoft Visual Studio Code development environment. Please
note that Microsoft Visual Studio Code is not a Microsoft Visual Studio IDE.
It is a lightweight code editor with very advanced features.
Victoria is looking for the best Android smart phone to buy. Jackie
recommended the Google Pixel as the one recommended for use with Talkback.
Jackie is having a problem with getting IOS to focus on a specific email in a
list. When she double taps on the spoken link, a different link opens up. It
was suggested that swiping right once the email is spoken and then swiping
back to the email might ensure that the correct email will open.
A second problem experienced by Jackie, Ken and Stuart, is that a strange
logo appears randomly, spoken by voiceover but not physically present on the
IOS screen. No amount of resetting the app or turning the phone on and off
prevents this event from occurring. Furthermore, it has proved impossible to
recreate it at will and so it cannot be reported to Apple or to Audible for a
solution.
Chris has a problem in Audible where a book which he had fully downloaded to
his iPhone and had begun reading, disappeared from Audible when he opened up
the app next day. Since the book was paid for and already downloaded, no
explanation could be found.
Martin was delighted to hear that he could simply copy a file from within his
documents and paste it onto a USB drive in the following way:
1. Press Windows and E to open File Explorer;
2. locate and open the "D" drive ( this is the drive for his current USB
connection);
3. locate the file on the PC;
4, Copy the file without opening it;
5. Paste the file into the "D:" drive window and the file should now appear
on the USB file list.
Paul found the Vodafone service very poor in repairing his iPhone SE. The
phone is only a few months old. and still under warranty. Vodafone, claimed
that they could not put his name on his phone because of GDPR! They also
failed to provide any information on what repair, if any, had been carried
out. He received a phone from Vodafone but cannot be sure that this is the
same phone that he left with them.
The meeting recommended that repairs should be sent back directly to Apple to
avoid this type of confusion.
The group advised that Paul make sure that the backed up data is fully
working before moving the SIM card from the current phone into the repaired
one.
Ken feared a corrupted link when trying to join a Zoom meeting recently. The
link refused to open when he tapped on the line of text that included the
link. Jackie explained that he needed to move word by word until he found the
actual word that contains the link. This often catches the screen reader user
who logically expects the entire prompt to activate the link. When navigating
in a PC-based email it might be best to hit the tab key to find the link. In
the case of IOS, turning the rotor to "links" and swiping up or down would
bring the user to the actual link whether it was many words wide or only one
word wide.
The meeting ended in an orderly manner.
