Pre meeting discussions.
The meeting began with a number of eager participants lining up outside the
door waiting for the teacher to open it. Ken was not feeling the best today we
wish him all the best and a fast recovery. The early participants discussed the
weather. It was quite different in various parts of the country. Jackie said
she was out last night the note taker thought she was out in the nightclubs.
Cearbhall told the group about an interview that he watched were a Russian
adviser to America discussed Putin. The recent podcast that was put up on the
FB list was discussed many people found it funny. It was for sightless cinema.
This went on for a while while we waited for more people to join the meeting.
Discussion on how fast the year is going came up. The new apple voices that are
going to be introduced in IOS sixteen were also briefly discussed. Eloquence
was anticipated. The history of iPhone voices came up Alex was said to have
been badly transferred to the iPhone from the mac. The Waltons tv show came up
as well. It turns out that Jackie went to a show in the Sligo hawk swell
theatre called the 3 Mary’s. she found it to be fantastic. She described in
detail the lovely burger she ate during the show it sounded delicious. She gave
a description of the play. So, the note taker guesses he was wrong in this
instance.
focus group for RTE
ken posted up a focus group for rte. on the FB list recently. Ken said that all
details of it are in the e-mail. Ken was surprised that he received it. Ken
described how he sends e-mails with links to the list. Discussion of how the
list can sometime bring up hidden characters if you delete characters was
highlighted.
New laptop.
Ken described his new dell laptop he is extremely excited to get it. He said he
should have it by next week. It is a bran new laptop. Ken said he will try NVDA
for a while. Cearbhall gave the group a description of the differences between
JAWS and NVDA. Jackie also gave her opinion of it.
New phone.
Paul described his wife’s new phone. She went for the Samsung galaxy. She is
really enjoying it. She was able to transfer her details over no problem from
her Huawei phone. Discussion of this Chinese brand of phone commenced for a
period.
Quick assist.
Jackie informed the group that the quick assist function of laptops does not
work with JAWS. According to Jackie this is because it will no longer be a part
of windows eleven. She commenced to do a lot of investigation of this issue.
She contacted a number of groups that help people with accessibility issues
around Ireland. It no longer works with any screen reader according to them.
Quick assist is the function wherein someone can remotely access your laptop to
aid you. This issue has appeared in the latest update. Cearbhall said he will
contact be my eyes to have a look at this issue. This will affect a sizeable
number of service users according to someone Jackie contacted about the issue.
Windows key and F allows you to send a fault report to Microsoft. She was told
to put in hash tag accessibility to get their accessibility department. The
group tried to find the hashtag key for a while as no one knew where it was on
a keyboard. Many options were tried but the note taker was unab le to find it
on his laptop. One of the participants swore quite vulgarly. Chris also
discussed his holiday to turkey at this point he sounded like he had a
remarkably interesting time.
Covid.
A number of participants discussed their history with covid. The symptoms were
discussed as well as the lack of masks available for sale. One of the
participants said they were a close contact. Chris mentioned that quite a
number of people on his plane back from turkey were not wearing masks. This
discussion went on for a while. Discussion of priority boarding was a topic
discussed as Chris was offered it on his way back from turkey, he was also
offered a wheelchair, he did not need one.
The hashtag issue reared its head again for a while with participants trying to
figure out what its purpose is. It was compared to drugs because of the name.
Voice control/iPhone
One of the participants asked what the purpose of voice control was. It is a
way of controlling your phone by giving it voice commands. The note taker used
it to take a picture of themselves in the past. Jackie described her fantastic
stand she bought to hold her iPhone. She compared it to a microphone stand. She
uses it for teams and zoom and for voice dream scanner it has improved the
quality of the scanner. It cost her eighteen euro. The issue of hashtag raised
itself from the deep briefly like a dolphin jumping out of the water before
going under again briefly. It is called number on a keyboard with JAWS. Paul
pressed all the keys on his keyboard but could not find it. Cearbhall found it
on his keyboard. Jackie’s dog Sasha joined briefly in the meeting to
contribute to the discussion of hashtag keys. This was a persistent issue
throughout the meeting as you can easily infer.
Zoom/Teams meetings
Cearbhall said he worked on zoom during the week. His goal was to set up a
meeting during the week, but he faced difficulty. A number of participants were
able to do it. To do it enter the schedule option on the home menu and follow
the instructions from that point. Different methods were discussed.
Participants had a few diverse ways of doing it. Teams was brought up it is
extremely easy to do it on outlook. Jackie gave us her method. You enter the
calendar. This created significant discussion during the tech club. Whoever
created the meeting is the host and can open a meeting.
Ken mentioned that he did teams screenshare for the first time in teams. He
found it to be interesting. He got a small bit of help from Jackie in
practicing for doing it. Ken found it to be very fiddly but, in the end, he
found it worked very well for him. Hashtag came back here to briefly. Screen
sharing is different on an iPad in comparison to an iPad you need to go to more
calling options to find it on an iPhone. Share on an iPad. Trying to figure out
how to do it on the laptop came up control and e is the key command to do it.
ken wondered if you could share audio books through share screen, Jackie said
you could not do this. Stuart suggested finding audio books on you tube to get
it to work, Jackie said drop box might work we left ken to figure this out.
Comparisons of teams and zoom as platforms commenced for a while. You can do a
lot more as a participant to control a teams meeting as opposed to zoom where
the host has more strict controls over a meeting.
Zoom screen sharing.
Martha suggested downloading a sample of an audiobook to your desktop as a way
of screensharing on teams. Jackie did not think this would work as it is
streamed not downloaded. Ken attempted to share an audiobook to see if it would
work during the meeting It surprisingly did work to the shock of all
participants. Ken entered zoom, turned on video, share content, screen, start
broadcast and microphone is on. Press home then selected his book. This was
zoom however, Jackie said she would evaluate this with ken on teams to
determine is similar results appeared at a later point. Discussion of
audiobooks went on for a while after this. A number of participants said they
do not like listening to eBooks on iPhone. They did not like the voices. Jackie
said she is planning to update her phone to try out the new features coming in
IOS 16. The lidar functions that will allow us to detect doors through the
camera interested her. Only the twelve pro and up will have these features.
Jackie shared
her favourite voice dream voice Graham, she did this through screen share.
Graham was sleepy but eventually woke up and wowed the audience with his
fantastic vocals. She got him to read the windows jaws guide Cearbhall sent a
number of months ago. Jackie said she shared her screen the same way ken did to
share his audiobook previously. For some strange reason voice over does not
come through with screen share on zoom. Ken decided to assess if a sample of an
audiobook from a website would share as well as a full book. Ken swore quite
vulgarly for some strange inexplicable reason he continued engaging in this
behaviour for a few minutes. Then he started humming to himself and the
audience for some reason. He faced quite a number of difficulties; however, he
eventually was successful. If you are not focused on the zoom call it was
discovered that you could not here the audio.
Revolute/ text frauds
Ken said he got a revolute message yesterday that said his account was locked.
It was fake be careful of these messages. Martha said she is a major fan of
revolute as she can transfer money easily. She got two buttons saying request
and send. Request means that you ask for money from someone while send means
that you will send them money. Do not add an extra zero by accident. It was
advised that you double check that your money has gone through Jackie offered
to help all you have to do is send her ten euro. Discussion of other fraudulent
messages continued. Jackie mentioned a Post having one wherein you are told a
package has arrived and you can be charged two euro. Jackie checked in the post
office and was reassured that it was fake. Other participants provided their
experiences with fraud text messages and e-mails. Stuart said he nearly got
caught with the caburies fraud around easter. The note taker advises that
everyone be incredibly careful with these messages. Participants were
wondering if revolute worked internationally they were unsure.
Conclusion
The meeting broke up at this point and the participants decided to break up for
some lunch. This was an interesting meeting. The note taker hopes that you
found these minutes to be interesting.
All the best
Regards
The Note taker
