Dublin technology club notes 4th December 2023

Good morning, it's me, the notetaker, here on this frosty December morning. So sit back and enjoy the read of the antics that took place at the most recent Dublin Technology Club.

14 participants

Four participants started the meeting early. The notetaker thinks that everyone was out Christmas shopping instead of attending the meeting this week.

There was a bit of discussion about how cold it has been in the last few weeks.

Martin told the group he is using NVDA this morning because JAWS was acting up for him. He finds it quite easy to use. He explained how to activate and deactivate NVDA using Control + Alt + N.

Cearbhall brought up the recent email regarding the experiment a woman down in UCC wishes to do. He explained the experiment, and the note taker participated in it. Cearbhall said he would resend the email to the list, leading to a long discussion on the project.

Bob asked if anyone is currently using devices that are similar to navigate, describing ones he has heard of  such as one that is the  size of a cigarette lighter, one  built into a hat, and a belt version,. He mentioned names like Mowat.

 Buzz Clip,

 and Sunuband

are ones the note taker has heard of. Adrian mentioned one called straptech.

Albert mentioned BlindSquare

Bob brought up a device called Sonas, described as a ring or wrist strap that vibrates. The topic of vibrating devices and alternatives to using a cane sparked an interesting discussion.

Cearbhall mentioned having issues with Zoom, involving VoiceOver volume being too loud. Mary shared difficulties with VoiceOver focusing on an element on the screen, and Albert suggested changing the double-tap timeout setting in the accessibility settings under VoiceOver.

The note taker described how he uses Be My Eyes to take text out of screenshots,  leading to a discussion on how to take more than one picture in the app. To do this open be my eyes, select be my AI, take a picture, wait until you get the description, select ask more, locate the text field and swipe left to find ad picture.

Mary informed the group about the Visionaries Choir competition at ChildVision next Saturday. She also asked how to get an Eircode, and Albert provided a solution using

Albert introduced the app what three words

a GPS system where you choose three unique words to describe a location. The group discussed its functionality and whether both parties need the app e.g the user and the owners of the address.

Eamon conducted an experiment using Sony headphones, noting differences in clarity and voice blur. Albert revisited the what3words app and experimented with words like pink, mood, and dots.

The group discussed navigation apps, favoring BlindSquare. Albert mentioned its ability to set markers on specific shops for notifications.

Mary inquired about issues with BorrowBox during the week, and Cearbhall mentioned it went down at one point, undergoing a system change. They also discussed various books, including the recently awarded book "Profit Song" that won an award  atthe Booker Awards.

Martin asked what you call a man with a rubber toe. Martin said the answer is Rubberto.

Martin said who would Santa call if his slay broke down, he said the abominable tow man.

on that note, hoping  everyone has a happy week until next time.

Regards,

The notetaker.
