Clever you! It looks as if you have hit the answer all right! I tried the App
store just now with my Bluetooth keyboard in another room. The onscreen
keyboard has popped up perfectly and I can edit the search window without it
disappearing. I'll explore this further today with the Bluetooth keyboard
nearby, on and off.

That is a strange one. From time to time, the on screen keyboard disappears on
me when I explore the screen above it, but aside from that, I’ve seen no issues
like you describe.
I wonder might your phone be connecting to the bluetooth keyboard by mistake?
Does the keyboard have. An on/off switch?
That’s all I can think of right now.
