I can confirm that David put his finger directly on the reason for my problem.
I have just tried the app store search with my Bluetooth keyboard turned on but
untouched. I then went to the iPhone screen and double tapped on the search box
at the top of the AppStore screen.Again, the onscreen keyboard did not come up.
I then turned off the Bluetooth keyboard and lo! The onscreen keyboard came up.
I must remember to make sure in future that my Bluetooth peripherals are not
switched on, even if not being used, when I encounter new problems with the
onscreen functions.

I wonder is this the same issue I was having. I'm wondering has the keyboard
disappeared from anywhere else. Then did you try the bluetooth keyboard
command I used and see will that return the keyboard.
I'm not one for doing setting resets on a regular bases.
