Apologies Paul Griffith
The first issue of the day came from Mary and it involved access to the
recordings of the recent series of webinars given by sight and sound. Martin
said he had received an E mail on the subject from Stuart Lawler on Saturday
and he would forward it to the group. Stuart had indicated that the recordings
would be available on the sight and sound website.
Tom threw in a new ball but thankfully didn't mention the result from last
Saturday's match in Croke Park. He wanted to know how to forward a text message
on his phone. Jackie said she would call him on the Lady Alexa after the
meeting to talk him through it. Eamonn said a friend had an old Nokia phone and
she wondered if it could be used as a radio receiver. Albert said this is
possible by going into the settings menu, then shortcuts and setting a
particular button to activate the function but you had to plug in the earphones
as they acted as an aerial. Still on the subject of phones, Martin asked, on
behalf of a friend who did not want a high tech phone, if Cearbhall would
recommend the phone used by his brother. Cearbhall said he wouldn't as it was a
basic model with many limitations.
Martin inquired about the scanning capabilities within the latest edition of
jaws. Joe provided the following instructions. To take a scan from the scanner
with JAWS
Press Insert & Space
O for OCR
A for acquire
This will open the scan panel, we can normally press start here to start the
process. If not we can tab until we find scan/start/acquire etc.
This will take a few moments to retrieve the document. When finished if the
doc doesn't auto read we can alt tab to it.
From here we can
Ctrl A to select all
Ctrl C to copy
We then open an email and in the body of text we can Ctrl V to paste.
Cearbhall has provided further instructions; OCR Text Directly into a Word
Document
The Convenient OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature has been enhanced to
support sending recognized text directly to Word. Convenient OCR enables you to
access images containing text that is part of the image and displays this
information in the Results Viewer. This includes onscreen images such as the
graphical setup screen for an application, an inaccessible PDF opened in Adobe
Reader, a currently selected image file in Windows Explorer, or a document
acquired by the PEARL camera or a flatbed scanner.
Note the reference to a flatbed scanner at the end.
Cearbhall told us he was having various focus problems in iOS 14.7 when on his
iPhone SE. For example, correctly selecting from a list of books or radio
stations. Cearbhall found a solution to the focusing problem by
turning off full keyboard access in the Hardware Keyboard section on
accessibility in settings. On the subject of keyboards, Bert said he found his
Rivokeyboard to be very useful for texts and calls when traveling as it was
discreet and did not require him to take out his phone from its secure
location.
Mary and Bert both reported that their paid subscription service iTunes was not
very accessible. Bert said an alternative service was Walt 2 pro, but it was
more expensive. Regarding the subject of maintaining access ability, the
introduction of windows 11 may present some challenges. The consensus was that
people should defer updating their operating system for the moment. There were
a number of reasons for this but mainly because Windows 10 will be supported
well into the 2020s and a fairly new computer is required to operate windows
11.
Eamonn said he had duplicate old Yahoo emails on an old phone which he wanted
to delete but was concerned they might also be deleted from his current phone.
After some discussion the issue remained unresolved and Eamonn said he would
explore the matter a little further and report next week. Eamonn had another
issue where he wanted to simplify his computer setup. He wanted to operate two
computers from a single monitor, keyboard and mouse. It was suggested that he
try the shop back from the future for a piece of hardware interface. Eamonn
told us that the sight village event was on this week but unfortunately he
subsequently informed us it was not online this year.
The meeting then effectively ended when Martin told us he was off to have an
Ancient Role for his lunch!!!
