Stuart opened the discussion wondering how to get the function keys on his
laptop to work with NVDA. The solution, was discovered at the Cork meeting last
Saturday, and meant holding down the FN key to make the function keys F1 to F12
work as they normally do on a PC. Being careful to press the NVDA key first
and then the FN key holding both down while pressing the required function key.
This led to a follow-up question of how to lock the FN key in the alternate
position so that it would not need to be pressed every time. This is something
to bring back to the next meeting.
Martin has been experimenting with the new envision glasses. which are
available for 2000. He wondered how they might compare with the OrCam glasses
sported by Tom. However, this will need further investigation.
As this is a holiday session, moving along at an easy pace, each person agreed
to describe the best use they get from an assistive device.
Annette began with the iPhone using Voiceover. She uses it for phone calls,
text messages, audio books, WhatsApp and photos.
Martin's favourite app is Soundscape by Microsoft on the iPhone. He enjoys its
accuracy and can pinpoint bollards, regular shops and road junctions.
However, the most magnificent device he has ever known is the Blind Shell sold
by NCBI for about 450. This is a feature phone with specific apps which NCBI
has loaded into it. He demonstrated that he can access his contacts, make phone
calls, run YouTube, listen to the radio on the train and use the recorder. It
is half the size of an iPhone and fits easily into a shirt pocket.
Tom loves his iPhone. He can download audio books from several audio
libraries, read and send email and text messages. make phone calls, scan
documents, and navigate his way inside and outside the house. Tom also sports
an OrCam which he uses to negotiate the streets of Galway and to scan and read
print books.
Joe uses the iPhone for calls, text messaging, WhatsApp, banking, Facebook,
Zoom, navigation with the Lazarillo app and apps relating to amateur radio.
He also uses a desktop PC running JAWS, managing amateur radio apps sending and
receiving emails and gaining access to the internet.
Tom lost his way and could not get back after taking a phone call during the
meeting. He was delighted to find that he could get back in by opening the app
switcher to tap on Zoom without having to log back into the meeting.
Annette learned that recently arrived travellers from Sidney and Dubai were
all wearing masks but when they got to London and Dublin there was not a mask
in sight! Lets hope our confidence will be rewarded!
Martin withdrew from the meeting with a triumphant announcement that he was
having sour dough for lunch instead of his normal ancient roll today. He will
be seen next week at the races throwing, his money around and sporting his best
top hat and tails!
