I would be happy to share some of my views on heritage and visual impairment. I
spent my first 10 years of working life in archaeology and preservation of
heritage sites.
A very simple, basic helpful thing is to provide visitors with very lightweight
gloves (disposable of course!) to wear so that they can handle the objects
without damaging the exhibits. As you know, human sweat is very corrosive and
it is very unwise to handle any object with uncovered skin.
Care of lighting with regard to brightness and suitable colour tones would
enable people with partial site to view the objects in comfort.
Use of audio description is essential. However, silence and privacy are
preferred by most visitors to sites. So, recorded audio on a Bluetooth using
system can be easily picked up on a smart phone. This would provide spoken
feedback without disturbing other visitors. It would avoid the need to provide
headsets to visitors and reduce the need for maintenance of the communicating
device.
Of course Braille labels are very helpful. It might be possible to place QR
tags that give text descriptions that can be read on the smart phone .... and
so on.

I was wondering if you or any other blind or visually impaired people you know
have any thoughts on heritage museums and cultural places in general with
regard to accessibility. The reason I ask is that my sister lectures in
heritage in UCD and I am going to talk to some students on Tuesday over there.
These are students of heritage and as part of their studies, they would like to
know how best to facilitate people with disabilities in heritage museums,
cultural museums and exhibitions, and obviously the issue of those with a
visual impairment is relevant here hence the reason I am involved with this
project. I would appreciate if you could consider this and forward it to anyone
who you feel could help with the above.

Gosh is the Dergdale still going strong then!
It was a haunt of many of us back in the day and you couldn't get much
closer to the League that's for sure.
Hotel prices are very expensive now IMHO almost double price at
weekends to add insult to injury as they say.
