Mary raised a question today about winmail.dat files which she was receiving
from someone as an attachment to an email. I thought this related to problems
with Microsoft’s built-in mail service under Windows 10 but that is not the
case.
Winmail.dat files are sent by people using Microsoft Outlook as their email
application. Under certain circumstances Outlook will encode attached files,
like Word or PDF files, in this winmail.dat format.
Since we are all likely to meet this problem in the future, I thought I would
post the article below to explain the whole situation and to offer a solution.
The first app mentioned here is free but may include ads. The second one costs
99c in the app store. I found other apps costing up to €39 also on the app
store so I recommend trying this one if the first one below does not solve the
issue!
Option 1:
Winmaildat Opener

Winmail.dat Opener is a free app to open those common 'winmail.dat'
attachments. This app is free of charge and fully functional, giving you access
to the files without any need for further in-app purchases. The optional
in-app-purchase will remove ads.
Our app registers as a handler for .dat files. It is launched when you tap to
open the "winmail.dat" attachment, enabling you to see a list of its contents.
You can then preview, resend or print the contained files or save them to an
album.
This app will extract the winmail.dat on your phone or tablet, it does not
require an Internet connection for this process.
Second option:
If you need to open winmail.dat files on your iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod
Touch) try Winmail File Viewer which currently costs 99 cents in the iTunes
Store.
