I hate to say it but get used to it. I love the AirPods, but they are as
glitchy as all hell. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve had to re-pair
them ☺️

Mary if you leave them in their case and leave the lid open and hold the
opened case over your phone you should get a notification on your phone
alerting you to how much battery is in both AirPods and the case and if they
need charging. You can also add the "BATTERY" Widget to your Today View or
Home Screen, this will give you the battery status of all Bluetooth enabled
devices.

There is anew setting exclusively for Apple earbuds and headsets:
Go to Settings/Accessibility, Audio/visual and check the "Left - right
stereo balance" values. You may find that the right earphone is turned down
to 0.
There is another setting in Voiceover itself under audio that allows you to
dedicate speech to either left or right or both earbuds and separately set
the audio to either left, right or both earbuds.
Let us know how you get on with either of these settings.
