The app_server doesn't use black, or at least didn't use to; I definitely
were able to run Haiku with overlay just fine some years ago with the
Intel Extreme driver (which also worked in BeOS).
Anyway, the following code determines the color:

I can only say that this used to work -- it might have been broken in the
mean time, but I don't believe it until proven :-)
The CMAP8 issue might actually be a real issue, though; I don't remember
if I ever tested that, at least.
