 Sorry for the slow reply, I had to dig my old laptop out of the closet and
 find a working power cord.  It would appear this issue has been solved for
 me.

 Sadly it doesn't seem like I can change resolution up or down (up -- right
 side goes off the screen edge, down -- some weird mosaic that reminds me
 of one of those sliding block puzzles, where blocks of ~300 px x 100 px
 are in random order).  But the colors are correct at least!  Plus I can
 use it at 1024x768, albeit with stretching for the widescreen.
