I wanted to find out the answer to the question we raised in the last meeting about [External Model] ports. The question was whether [External Model] was allowed to have user defined ports so that an [External Circuit] could potentially be connected to those. I found this on page 108 of the v5.0 specification: | Model units under [External Model] may only use reserved | ports. The reserved, pre-defined port names are listed in the | General Assumptions heading above. As noted earlier, digital | and analog reserved port functions will be assumed by the tool | and connections made accordingly. All the ports appropriate | to the particular Model_type subparameter entry must be | explicitly listed (see below). Note that the user may connect | SPICE, Verilog-A(MS) and VHDL-A(MS) models to A_to_D and | D_to_A converters using custom names for analog ports within | the model unit, so long as the digital ports of the converters | use the digital reserved port names. The first sentence of this paragraph gives the answer to my question, which is "NO". An [External Model] can only have the reserved ports, except when there are A_to_D or _D_to_A converters involved, but even then these converters must end up being connected to the digital reserved nodes, which means that another [External Circuit] may not be used to provide terminations to unused T-stone ports in [External Model]s. So if we want have a direct connect Touchstone S-parameter model in an [External Model] (without an ISS wrapper), we have to provide all termination definitions in the description of the [External Model] keyword. This must include unused T-stone ports as well as the ones which are connected to the terminals of the [External Model].
