Hi Ashley,

In my last email to you I admitted that we would have to get a grant. While the grant was something we had already talked about, getting approval from our own board and then seeking the grant was probably going to put us well past January 19. So I have to admit "less than 100% guaranteed" was optimistic. At that point I had received little feedback from the board. But the day after I emailed you two of the board members came out against it, and I realized it either would not pass a vote or would be delayed even more for discussion.

The day after that came the email from Rebecca and I saw that she had no idea there were any issues at all. I sheepishly spoke with her and explained. What bothers me even more is that I think she would be perfect for that project. One thing that was always important to me is that the intern would have a good experience. But I personally will be unavailable for the second half of the month and I suddenly wasn't finding anyone else to provide supervision. If my board is not on board we can't do it.

So my deepest apologies, this worked out badly. I started off with Tom Stites on one shoulder urging me to charge ahead, but ended up with more people on the other shoulder. I also apologize for the delay, it seemed no one was responding to email quickly in the last two weeks of the year.

We will be much better positioned for interns once we have 100 founding members, collect the $25,000, and hire our first paid employee. We are all frustrated by how long this has taken, but we keep getting closer. I hope it happens this year, but it's incredible how long it takes to form cooperatives in general.

Hi Mike,

I heard that the opportunity with Haverhill Matters is no longer available. Would you be able to provide some feedback about your interview with Rebecca? I was slightly confused because the day before it sounded like everything was all set.

I just wanted to touch base and see if there were any issues on our end.

Thank you for any insights you can offer.

Hi Mike,

No problem, that sounds like an exciting project! Let me call Rebecca and let her know that I will be introducing the two of you via email. Once I do, feel free to coordinate an interview this week at a time that works for both of your schedules. I will send that email shortly.

The end date will depend on payment. With unpaid internships we are less flexible and the internship ends on April 22^nd or once the 168 hours are completed. With paid internships, there is much more flexibility and if the relationship is mutual, many employers hire the intern part time after the internship is over. I hope this helps.

Hi Ashley,

Happy New Year to you too! Sorry about the delay, but be assured we have been discussing the matter all along.

Where we stand is that we do have a job description, although taking another look I see it might need a few tweaks to match NECC guidelines. The job is basically to start a very comprehensive online community calendar, which will involve participating in calendar design discussions, writing policy documents, reaching out to event organizers, and curating the calendar content.

The key issue is that the internship would depend on Haverhill Matters getting a grant from a local sponsor. This is not out of the blue for us, we have been preparing ourselves to pitch this project idea for some time. At this point it's just a matter of me or another director making the approach for the grant.

My preference would be to interview Rebecca this week, if a less than 100% guarantee of position availability is acceptable. So yes I would like to be connected with Rebecca. It is important that she has a good internship experience and we should begin with seeing how she feels about the project before any decision is made.

One question though: Would the internship pose a hard end date when she would no longer be available?

Hi Mike,

That sounds great. We have a short window of time for placements
and are looking to start students around January 19^th .
Internships are 14 hours per week for 12 week, totaling 168 hours.
The compensation range in our program is from $9-$17.50/hour. At
$9 per hour, you are looking at about $1,500 for the semester.

For the job description, most employers include a brief overview
of the company, a list of day-to-day tasks, and an overarching
project that the student is expected to complete during the
semester. For example, some employers have made their overarching
project related to social media and establishing presence on
different platforms, then presenting a plan to managers.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Ashley,

We actually have quite a list of things that need to be done. I
will start a board discussion to see what might be particularly
beneficial to a student. Also we need to check our finances, as we
have incorporation costs coming up soon.

I do agree we should supply a job description ahead of an
introduction. Do you have any guidelines/requirements that you can
share regarding the NECC internship program?

Thanks for contacting us!

Hi Ashley — One of Rebecca’s skills is writing a resumé, and
thanks to you and Amy for alerting us to her. Since we were
in touch, Haverhill Matters has formed its founding board, so
I’m passing this along to its president, Mike LaBonte, who’ll
follow up with Rebecca.

Here’s wishing you meaningful holidays —

Tom

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
