New Discussion:
IBIS version 6.2 or 7.0?:
- Walter: [sharing a private email with Bob Ross regarding editorial tasks]
- Discussion: Walter reviewed discussions with Bob regarding what BIRDs should
go into the next IBIS revision. Walter noted that 6.2 had originally been
envisioned as ground and ground referencing cleanup revision. A block of
BIRDs related to that had already been approved, as were additional BIRDs that
were editorial in nature and required minimal parser changes. Walter said the
following block of approved BIRDs was what Bob R. had envisioned for 6.2:
BIRD179 New IBIS-AMI Reserved Parameter Special_Param_Names
BIRD180 Require Unique Pin_Names in [Pin]
BIRD182 POWER and GND [Pin] signal_name as [Pin Mapping] bus_label
BIRD183 [Model Data] Matrix Subparameter Terminology Correction
BIRD184.2 Model_name and Signal_name Restriction for POWER and GND Pins
BIRD185.2 Section 3 Reserved Word Guideline Update
BIRD188.1 Expanded Rx_Noise Support for AMI
Walter noted, however, that we had recently approved or were very near
approving other BIRDs with more technical content. He said the question was
whether those BIRDs should also be included in the next revision. Walter
noted his preference for not having a separate 6.2 release for the first block
of BIRDs (above) and then having a second release for the other. This
second block of BIRDs included:
BIRD186.1 File Naming Rules
BIRD147.6 Back-channel Support
BIRD187.3 Format and Usage Out Clarifications
BIRD181.1 I-V Table Clarifications
BIRD158.x AMI Touchstone (R) Analog Buffer Models.
In addition, BIRD 189, the new interconnect proposal, had recently been
introduced. BIRD 166, Redriver Init Flow corrections, had also been
discussed.
Bob Ross agreed with Walter's summary. Bob confirmed his preference for a 6.2
release to get some of the first block of BIRDs taken care of quickly. Bob
noted that first block of BIRDs would require only minor changes in the
parser. Minor parser release updates are provided for free to purchasers of
the source code for a major revision. Bob expressed concern that BIRD 181.1
would have significant editorial implication and could affect other BIRDs. He
felt it was better to leave it out of the next release. He also noted that he
felt BIRD 186.1 involved major editorial changes throughout the spec and was
better left for a 7.0 release. Bob noted that BIRDs 147.6 and 158.x did not
involve major parser changes, so even though they introduced new functionality
he was open to moving them into the 6.2 release. Radek noted that Bob's list
wasn't that different from Walter's if 147.6 and 158.x could go into 6.2. Bob
stated that 186.1 was the major difference between their plans because Bob
considered it a major spec change. Bob also noted that he felt 181.1 still
required significant work and would be a large editorial change. Radek agreed
that 181.1 was a significant editorial change, but he said he felt it should
go in the next release. Bob expressed concern that no revision of the spec
can be fully adopted until a parser is available. He felt that adding more
BIRDs into one single release would delay the onset of any parser development
and delay the adoption of everything.
Arpad noted that he thought BIRD 158.x and BIRD 189 should probably be kept
together (appear in the same version of the spec). He said that BIRD 189
added the concept of on-die interconnect, and the terminology used in BIRD 158
for the buffer terminals should be in agreement with with the terminology used
in BIRD 189 to allow for on-die interconnects in case someone wants to model
them. Walter said that he disagreed and felt that BIRD 158.x could
be introduced independently and later modified to adjust for BIRD 189 when it
was introduced. Arpad noted that we had been working on some of the
technical BIRDs for quite some time, and he felt we should at least get some
of the technical content BIRDs into the next revision.
Bob Miller noted that BIRD 147.6 was written utilizing BIRD 186.1 concepts.
He felt they needed to be kept together. Bob R. said he felt BIRD 147.6
could be introduced with the limitations imposed by not having BIRD 186.1.
Bob M. said he was reluctant to re-draft BIRD 147.6 to remove the dependence
on BIRD 186.1.
Ambrish noted that a new draft of BIRD 158 (BIRD 158.4) had recently been
introduced and still required review.
To separate the questions of what BIRDs go into the next release and what
the release will be called, Walter moved that we hold a straw poll vote on
which upcoming BIRDs should be included in the next release of the spec.
Mike LaBonte seconded. For each of the following BIRDs, Arpad asked if
attendees felt the BIRD should appear in the next release of the spec:
attendee votes member organization tally
BIRD yes:no yes:no
---- ------ ------
BIRD186.1 13:0 9:0
BIRD147.6 13:0 9:0
BIRD187.3 13:0 9:0
BIRD181.1 11:2 7:2
BIRD158.x 12:1 8:1
- Arpad: I think this list of BIRDs and the results of the poll can be
forwarded to the Open Forum for discussion on Friday.
- Walter: I will draft an email to ATM with the results of this straw poll on
what we recommend the Open Forum should include in the next release.
- Mike L.: Motion to adjourn.
- Curtis: Second.
- Arpad: Thank you all for joining.
AR: Walter to send an email to the ATM list containing the results of the straw
poll on which BIRDs to include in the next revision.
