I'll give it a look. Hopefully when I get my new copy of ProTools this
Wednesday, I'll be able to better tweek things. Yeah, I have the copy of PT my
church gave me, but... it's a long story...

Write me off list, if you wanna know.

We'll just leave it here to say my church is in big big trouble with Avid right
about now for misrepresenting their company.

Chris.

That's true. but yeah try that compressor and the speech enhancer I think
that's where it is. I don't have gb open at the moment but all in all it's
good. I plan on doing a test recording with a bit of compression when I get my
new piece of kit.

Also I took classes and have a degree in this stuff, how ever I still hate it
as if used improperly like you said the results can be dreadful lol!

  Take care of yourself.

Edit the compresser in gb bu going to edit radio button then enabling the
compresser then go to edit hit that button int he compresser group and you
should be set. There are a bunch of sliders but I hate compression so I never
use it.

    Take care.

OK, maybe someone here will have some idea how to work through this.

I am trying to record a track of me singing lead vocals on top of a
backing karaoke track using Garage Band. This is a country based genre song,
so one thing with country music generally is the lyrics are what really need to
drive the most attention to the song. What's tending to happen is my vocals
are becoming very very clipped somewhere along the recording chain. My guess
is I'm probablyu clipping the internal buss, by the sound of it. The odd thing
is according to the meters on my interface, I'm peeking around -12DB which
isn't even close to clipping. This is why I'm thinking somehow, it's not within
the interface. I'm thinking it's somehow clipping at the DAW internal buss
level. With this said, here's what I'd like to do along with my question.
Hopefully someone will know a way in GB to make this happen. I'm not aposed at
all to using Amadeus Pro, if you all think this task will be much easier there.
I'd like to stick with GB however if at all possible.

So, what I'd like to do, is, first of all, I need to probably on my
interface, I'm thinking, probably back off my gain just a bit. Actually, quite
a bit. I'm saying run it so I'm peeking around maybe instead of -12DB, maybe
go to -24DB. This way, we've basically cut the level in half. Then seeing we
know -12DB is apparently the clipping point, I'd like to take a compressor, and
add a very fast attack with a very slow release. I'd say maybe just a few
milliseconds on the attack, and maybe a second or so on the release.
Basically, I'm looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of a 2/1 ratio.
Basically, what I'm trying to do is have Garage band's compressor boost my
level. In other words, record the vocals very quiet then let the compressor
boost them back up to an acceptible level, rather than me trying to drive the
DAW really hot, if that makes any sense. I'm sure especially to people like
Sarah, it will. Cause obviously you always always always! wanna run some
compression on vocals as it helps with levelling problems like this. So, I
want to set it where basically the compressor knows that -12DB is too high.
Then also, using a compressor, I'd like to have it clamp down! a bit on the
music. This way what we're essentially doing is using two compressors. One to
bring the vocal up and boost the signal, then another to roll off the backing
karaoke track a ways.

I know there are different presets with the compressor effect built into
GB, but is this something that is fairly easy to set manually to the way I'm
describing? I'm sorry, but I do not do preconfigured presets. I've found that
there aren't any good ones. Just bottom line. They all in my opinion only,
sound like crap. I prefer starting from scratch and building my own customized
setup.

So, does anyone have any suggestions how I can cut this internal buss
clipping down? I just know! I can't say for sure, but I almost can bet my
money on that is what is happening.

      Chris.
