Like I said, if you use keyboard commands, you won’t get hung up in the
toolbar or favorites bar at all. Once you are in the inbox, tab and shift-tab
will take you between the message list and the mailbox list, provided you have
the mailbox list visible. VO-j will jump between the message list and the
content of a selected message.
Command-r will reply to a selected message.
Command-shift-r, replies to all.
Command-n, composes a new mail message.
Command-shift-f, forwards a message.
Command-shift-d, sends a message.
Command-shift-n, forces Mail to check for new messages.
Command-1, places VO focus in the inbox.

Hi!
I have been messing around in Apple Mail for the Mac and there is an item in
the files menu which says open in a new view and when I did this to see what
it would do, it took me to the inbox.
I also hid the tool bar and the favorites bar because I usually find myself
getting hung up in the favorites bar and have one heck of a time extricating
myself from it.
So hopefully this should simplify things for me.
