I just signed up for the Kodi discussion forums and can't
believe I finally got it done.
The process is your usual web registration form where you
fill in a user name, email address and password and the big fun
is a CAPTCHA which has an audible option. I was overjoyed that I
could solve it myself but as with a lot of retail-level design
and security theater, hours were to disappear from my life
forever.
When you get to the CAPTCHA, it is a third-party
application by google. Getting in is easy enough in that you
click the link for the CAPTCHA and are presented with the visual
or audible options and you click the audio link. That gives you a
link to download a small mp3 file containing the audio and a
button to activate a player. Click that, listen and remember the
five digits spoken at varying voices, sound levels and rates and
then get back to the field which asks you to enter what you hear.
That is where the real fun starts. I discovered my VO
cursor was trapped and stuck fast in the sound player. I became a
human curser at that moment as anything one did to break out of
the player either resulted in the clunk from Hell that tells you
the limits that shouldn't be there or it would get you completely
out of the web page and if you went back in, one tenede to open a
new window by accident and really confuse things by starting yet
another registration session.
Something else not to try is the logical idea to set two
web spots in voiceover. One was supposed to be inside the trap
and the other was outside the trap where you type the text of
what you heard.
Maybe that works but by that time, I had more than one
window open in the heat of battle and all I could find is the web
spot that got you trapped again inside the player.
I finally gave up on the Mac and tried it on the iPad.
The registration form is a little less flaky on the iPad but not
by much. It works a lot better if you use Tab or Shift-Tab. The
problem there is you don't hear any prompts telling you where you
are but by this time, I had the darn form almost memorized. You
can also do a fair job of finding your place by moving the
Left-Arrow one move to the left and you hear the heading.
Anyway, I answered all the easy questions such as my
name, email address and security questions before tackling the
CAPTCHA.
As an added bonus to make life almost too much fun to
stand, it appears that the feedback messages that you do get are
not always accurate so you should arrow through the form after
each entry and if there is any complaint, do not go any further
until it is resolved. Don't let errors accumulate or you'll be on
a wild goose chase.
When I did the audio CAPTCHA on the Mac, it played the
sound at the very same time that voiceover was talking over it.
One of the CAPTCHAS I heard was just loud enough to understand it
through voiceover and one doesn't seem to be stuck quite as hard.
You just carefully go in to pages and close the google mp3 page
and then arrow over to fill in the box.
Please, somebody, feel free to tell me how stupid I was
because it just shouldn't be this touchy. I am posting this saga
to maybe learn something.
