When one creates an account in Catalina, one of the things one
must fill in is a full name field. I did and the system did not
follow what is normal unix protocol. Normally, the "Full name"
field gets parsed between the first and last names such that the
user ID is the first name and your home directory will be
/Users/firstname. When I did this in Catalina, I used "Martin
McCormick" as the full name, expecting to get /Users/martin as my
home directory with a login name of martin.
What I got is a home directory of /Users/martinmccormick"
I also use this system as a unix host on my home network and use
ssh to go between the Mac and some other Linux boxes. On all the
other boxes, I am martin@boxname. If you want to use ssh and scp
between those systems without a password, you exchange public
keys between them all and also place the host name or a system
name of the networked systems in a special file so that each
system knows the others are okay.
I am actually very unhappy with Catalina as it is always
full of unpleasant surprises and gotchas. Many people probably
won't stumble over these things so if Catalina works for you, by
all means use it but I would be perfectly happy to roll it back
to Mojave and call it good. The passwordless remote commands and
logins to the other systems only work well as long as one's user
ID is the same for all the systems, example: martin@wb5agz or
martin@rpi1
When I am on the Mac, I look like martinmccormick@phoenix
which is the host name of the Mac when it should be just
martin@phoenix.
So again, my question was is that concatenation normal
for Catalina or did I do something wrong when I was setting up
the system? There is no space between the first and last names
and all letters are lower case.
