You should enter the username as you want it so in your case your first initial
and last name etc. Just add it as a single entry and it will provision just
fine. The username field is different from the full name field so enter the
username as the shortened form and full name as your full name. In the Unix
“passwd" file the username defines the first field and followed by the : would
be the user name.
Note that your user name even with the white space is valid because you
can nest in quotes and present as a single object but yeah I totally get why
you want to do what you’re trying to do and use a unified easy username. Works
perfectly on mine however using the fields that way.

system knows the others are okay.
I am actually very unhappy with Catalina as it is always
full of unpleasant surprises and gotchas. Many people probably
won't stumble over these things so if Catalina works for you, by
all means use it but I would be perfectly happy to roll it back
to Mojave and call it good. The passwordless remote commands and
logins to the other systems only work well as long as one's user
ID is the same for all the systems, example: martin@wb5agz or
martin@rpi1
When I am on the Mac, I look like martinmccormick@phoenix
which is the host name of the Mac when it should be just
martin@phoenix.
So again, my question was is that concatenation normal
for Catalina or did I do something wrong when I was setting up
the system? There is no space between the first and last names
and all letters are lower case.
