Apple will provide you the updates free if you’re within a certain time frame
of having purchased your new mac. to check this / apply for the updates, please
see the below link

this explains the entire basis.
Please note, Anyone using OS X Server does not qualify for updates from Server
2X in mountain lion to Server 3x in Mavericks. this is a purchase only.
