Hi Matt, Welcome to Mac For The Blind,

Don't worry, there's a few brit's here including me, so you're in good hands.

I've done this on my iphone and heard it announce screen off.

here's what to do.

use 3 fingers together and triple tap the display, screen curtain will turn off 
and the display's back to normal.
