Yes, there is.

Go into system preferences, and I think it's under keyboard, if I'm not mistaken.

Go to the text tab, then it'll be one of the checkboxes on that screen you can uncheck.

I'm not in front of my mac right now to look up the specifics.

If that doesn't get you on the right track, let me know, and I'll look up down to the exacts where the option is. Yeah, I'm totally with you. That feature honestly drove me crazy! I turned it off both on the IPhone, and! on my mac. The main thing is, it's been so long since I did it, I don't exactly to a T remember where I did it. I'm pretty sure those instructions are pretty close though, if not dead on the money.

The one thing I noticed in trying to acquaint myself with the Lion is that even if you are reading someone else's email, it corrects THEIR SPELLING or
at least alerts you to misspelled words.  Is there a way to have it NOT do
that?
