I would have just rebooted from the DVD  that you should have burned int he 
first place and made a clean install. The last time I did an upgrade a disaster 
like this happened.

I'm thinking stuff might have physically happened with the hard drive or it's 
about to happen.

Keep us posted with the apple store appointment. as that's very odd.
