David is right. Unfortunately, if you have a Macbook, those features can be a 
real battery saver, but it can get in the way when you are trying to read 
stuff. It might be worth having it disable power saving settings when you are 
plugged in.

In terms of reading with Bookshare, I actually still use Windows for that, but 
I've been intending on finding a good Mac solution. Has anyone tried using the 
web reader Bookshare developed for the Chrome browser? I'm guessing you can use 
it with the Mac version of Chrome, too, though I don't know how accessible 
Chrome is with VO.
