I started a thread last week called "When Things Get
Strange" about el capitan and voiceover and found out that it is
apparently necessary to reboot more frequently than one should
ever have to do on a unix system.
I also have been busy on an iPad, visiting id.apple.com
to get an old applid unlocked and I have a an observation and a
new problem.
The observation is generally that safari on the iPad
works more intuitively in voiceover than does safari in el
capitan.
In el capitan, one hears a lot of web process messages
such as showing a bundle of links identified as a group.
Sometimes, you can arrow through them but most of the time, it is
necessary to interact with the group and then un-interact when
done with VO-Shift-upward arrow.
On the iPad, links seem to work more seamlessly and the
site is much more intuitive.
The new problem is that voiceover seems to have mutated
to a slightly different form of operation. Until this weekend,
pressing the up and down arrows performed a click or double-tap
on a link. Now, nothing happens. Fortunately the older VO-Space
still works.
Also, the Left and Right arrows used to be sufficient to
move through safari or the home screen and they quit working,
also.
I did a power cycle where you hold the rear switch down
until voiceover says "power off," and then you double-tap the
icon or select it with VO-Space
The system does go off but when I power it back on,
nothing has changed.
Something got switched on or off and I would like to
either find out how to locate what got moved or find a way to
reset the voiceover operation to what it was like before this
happened.
The good voiceover was in effect even before I upgraded
to IOS9.3.4 which is what I am running now. Before, it was
IOS9.3.3.
I have actually seen this behavior before and it
mysteriously corrected itself probably on the next upgrade.
This all probably sounds picky to some of you but I have
been messing with computers in general for 37 years and unix in
particular for 26 years and self-modifying code is a major no-no.
There are only two reasons for performance to suddenly
change.
1. I, the user, did something wrong to cause it without realizing it.
2. There are bugs in the OS and we are lucky that that is all
that happened this time.
When I was using the iPad, I was also using a bluetooth
keyboard. When you are doing lots of data entry, that's the best
way to do it.
