Well Sarah, I must say, that your more advance than me. I'd never dare do 
command line stuff just to get a task done for fear of messing my system up!

How about restoring to a previous time machine backup and see if that fixes 
your doc complications. As a last thought, if your just loading up apps how 
about using the standard shift commands. Sure I know the convenience of the doc 
can be but if it's that's flow for you, then just bringing up a list of apps 
and type the first few letters of it and cmd o seems a lot nor quicker. Since 
you say that it's taking 5 seconds or so. It would seem to just do the above at 
least for now until you get it resolved. I really can't think why you are 
having such strangeness but I hope you get it sorted.
