Abstract of Presentation: Herbal products are one of many food and agricultural commodities that are a key factor in many facets of naturally occurring substances used in wide variety of claims. Natural products from plants have had many uses throughout history. There are many researchers throughout the world looking for plants that have medicinal attributes. However, the chemical profile of a plant species varies from one location to another and from one species to next. Extraction and isolation of the components of the plants is critical to the beginning of the process. Profiling the active ingredients provides the basis of studying their effects on the human body. From there, one can undertake studies to understand the effects over the long term. This short talk will walk through some aspects of the extraction and quantification of the components plant extracts. This has resulted in analysis of the extracts obtained through supercritical fluid extraction with pure CO2 as well as with modifiers like methanol. The components are profiled with HPLC, UPLC, SFC, and UPC2 combined with mass spectrometry. Brief Biographical Sketch: Dr. John MacKay holds the Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from the University of Vermont where he focused on the synthesis for cancer fighting molecules that contained a cyclic phosphazene backbone. He joined Waters Technologies in 1983 after teaching appointments at three colleges. His career has included roles in technical sales, product development and management during the 80's, mass spectrometry business development during the 90's, and he has served as the Senior Director of Business Development for the Americas from 2002 until recently.
