Mel, Several districts in the Hartford area offer AP Chemistry to first year students. Relatively few students are capable of this level of academic rigor with little prior preparation. The heavy content load leaves little room for exploration of the joys of chemistry. I believe that many students that benefit most from an AP chemistry course are those that are interested in the subject but may not be the most academically talented. A strong second course in high school can prepare them for the rigors of college chemistry. We have had considerable success with an organic chemistry course offered during lunch each day. The course is offered to seniors who have taken AP chemistry and will be taking organic as a first course in college.
