Central Division Meeting of NEACT - "Poetry and Play" Saturday, May 3, 2014 Regis College - Weston, MA Registration begins at 8:30 am Program begins at 9:00 am Dr. Mala Radhakrishnan Humanizing chemistry through poetry, personification, analogy, and language There's a reason why "chemistry.com" is actually a dating website -- our own personal quests for happiness and stability can often serve as useful analogies to help understand and explain the behavior of atoms and molecules as they go about their business. In this workshop, we will explore how personification of chemical species, poetry, storytelling, and analogy can be useful ways to understand rigorous chemical concepts by making the material familiar, memorable, and humanized. Through writing our own narrative verse about chemical and physical phenomena, we will also discuss the limitations of analogies and other models in understand science. Finally, I will also read poems from my book of humorous, educational poetry, "Atomic Romances, Molecular Dances" and will discuss how I have encouraged students to creatively engage with chemistry both through using everyday language and ideas to describe complex chemical phenomena and by using discipline-specific chemical language to describe everyday phenomena. Dr. Leslie Bishop Inspiring Our Future - Science and Math Enrichment at the Regis College Children's Center and the Academy at Regis College As we know, it is so important that children are exposed to science and math to spark interest and curiosity. It is the hope that their excitement is generated as early as possible and sustained as they continue their education. Learn how the enrichment team at Regis College is carrying out this quest. Many manipulatives used in this program can easily be adapted for the high school and college chemistry classrooms. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore and play with many of them. We are all still kids at heart!
