8:30 am Continental Breakfast and Registration
9:00 am Welcome

9:15 am: Undergraduate Research at USM
Dr. Caryn Prudenté, Prof. and Chair of Chemistry, and Dr. Lucille Benedict,
Ass. Prof. of Chemistry, will discuss the role of undergraduate research within
the chemistry curriculum. Undergraduate research is one of the most meaningful
experiences faculty can provide students. Students learn valuable and
marketable skills, and gain hands on experience while exploring practical
applications of scientific concepts and theories. In addition, students gain
confidence, a better understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of
chemistry, and a sense of community. Undergraduate students will give a short
presentation on the current research projects in which they are currently
involved.

10:30 am Flipped Classroom
Dr. Benedict will discuss the implementation of the "flipped classroom" model
into the first year, first semester chemistry course.

11:00 am Chemistry Club
USM has an active Chemistry Club (an American Chemical Society student
affiliate) that travels throughout Maine to provide fun and educational
chemistry demonstration shows for K-12 students. The Chemistry Club students
gain service learning experience while providing community outreach to broad
audiences. Students host activities on campus and beyond, including visits to
public libraries and the children's museum, sponsor charity events and fund
raisers, and participate in public awareness events. The Chemistry Club's
faculty advisor will describe some of the club's recent activities and provide
a few simple demonstrations suitable for any classroom.
