For those of you who live near southwest CT and find our Northern division
meeting is too far away, you may find this presentation on the same day from
Connecticut Chemistry Teachers and NEACT a good option. (Note: unlike our
division meeting, the cost is $20 - but the program looks very interesting).

March 6, 2010 (8:30-12:30)

Sacred Heart University Science Bldg

Workshop A: Using the spec 20 or similar spectrophotometer, students perform
two experiments. In the first, the absorbance of a food coloring solution is
measured at various wavelengths. The data is graphed to show the
characteristic absorbance pattern of the food coloring.

The second experiment has the students make dilutions of a standard food
coloring solution and determine their absorbencies. The absorbance versus
concentration is then graphed with a best fit straight line. The graph is
then used to determine the concentration of an unknown. Joe Jankowski
Bolton High School

Workshop B: Using a uranium mining case study, the chemistry concepts of
significant figures, balancing equations, redox reactions, nuclear chemistry
and a bit of controversy are revealed. Lois Ongley Professor Unity
College in Maine.

Workshop C: Forensic science labs in the general chemistry curriculum to
illustrate solubility, precipitation reactions and blood typing. Wendy
Decter MD teacher Hill Regional Career Magnet HS New Haven

Workshop D: Coordination complex chemistry demonstration of the formation of
coordination complex along with a quantitative work to support it. This goes
along with the equilibrium unit of study in the AP Chemistry Curriculum.
Mr. Chyman Greenwich Academy

Workshop E1: We will explore anti-cookbook approaches to a few standard high
school chemistry laboratory activities and demonstrate how chemistry
enthusiasm, collegial enthusiasm and YES, student love of chemistry can soar
- while your students demonstrate deeper conceptual understandings. Trish
Rinaldi and Jim Lucey Wilton High School

Workshop E2: POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) is based on
participatory educational activities in small structured groups. What set
POGIL apart from other inquiry learning techniques is the process education
component, where students' awareness of their learning process enhances
learning effectiveness. The POGIL approach will be modeled in the workshop.
