do you mean 100kg cargo!? Thats a lot! You would really need very low gearing for that. Last weekend I did a long trip on the pythoon together with my son: little more than 100km ride through hilly surface (south of Fyn) and had no problems. My son weighs maybe 22kg now, and I had hand luggage/repair stuff with me. It was a long trip for my son but he enjoyed i. Though not something to repeat in the near future: When we came home, his mother had made dinner but he was so tired he simply put his head at the side of his plate, well on his way to dream land....

About walking: I a vacation in Sweden with the baby python I once got stuck on road laid with stones the size of fists (railway stones). The solution was to find a stick and put it in the derailleur tube up front using it for steering aid. That way it was possible to walk without getting back pain.

The problem with multi-rider cargo vehicle is the space and time the extra rider(s) would cost, unless the cargo is heavier than one rider can handle.  Electric motor assist is gaining popularity here.

Couple of weeks ago, I got leg cramp going up a train overpass, after ~3 hrs riding the futon trike, ~200 lbs with cargo to and back from work.  I was surprised that I could limp my way up hill, while loosened up the legs for another go back home.  The next overpass, I had no hesitation getting off the trike and pulling it up hill (no ego damage).  It seems that pedaling cargo uphill costs a lot more energy than pulling.

So do we have a new requirement for python walk-ability, with full load going uphill?

Hi,
if the seat is to close to the contact point of the front tyre on the street the python might tend to flop over the front weel going downhill. Specialy if the seat is not very low. This might be an unpleased expirience.

A long weelbase will help but will also make the python less nimble.
A reclined position will help, but will destroy, most what you gained by moving the seat forward.

Maybe its because it is a python, not a Mountain Goat?

I guess it is what you pay for the low position and easy drive train.

Gerald

PS Maybe Mountain Goat should be the name for a three in a row, all wheel drive recumbent bike  project?

Hi,

I guess if the driver is very close to the front wheel contact point, this could make a difference. A small front wheel would help and also a slightly elevated position to get even closer/further forward to the contact point. However, unless its a trike design, changes like this would alter the behaviour of a python substancially.
