Dirk,
Sorry to hear about your accident.  I had a similar mishap riding behind my
dad on his upright bike when I was four years old.  It certainly didn't
turn me away from bikes.  My dad did install these laced-in guards that
attached to the fenders so that it couldn't happen again.
Your son is so lucky to have a father that invents bikes!
