For those of you who read German, there is a very good paper on bicycle
suspension at:

http://wstiffel.homepage.t-online.de/F%20e%20d%20e%20r%20u%20n%20g-7.htm

For those who don't read German, the online translations of this paper
are pretty bad, but you will get some sense out of them.

In answer to Jurgen's question, I can't answer about a Python, but I
have ridden two recumbent tricycles long distances, one with rear
suspension, and one without, and otherwise very similar. I find that a
stiff rear suspension doesn't make a lot of difference to comfort (which
is also what Dr Stiffel would tell you). The suspended frame has lasted
over 20,000km. The non-suspended trike had a fatigue break in the right
chainstay at about 15,000km, but that was due to pedalling stresses.

The best advance in suspension I have encountered in a long time was a
set of Schwalbe Big Apple tyres. If you run them soft (2 or 2.5 bar),
rolling resistance is still surprisingly good, and comfort over gravel
is outstanding. They are light and seem resistant to punctures. The
tread is shallow and how long they will last, I don't know. Schwalbe
have other similar tyres in their Marathon range, see their site
(English and German):
