Jessica, about Slint:
1. As long as I maintain it you can be sure that it will stay accessible.
2. I announced the firat Slint version on 26 March 2013.
Initially the Slacwkare Internationalization Project, it became first
accessible with Braille, then with speech on 20 December 2017.
(Actually Slackware was the very first distribution to ship a kernel
with the speakup drivers, but needing a hard synthesizer).
3. I will eventually die (Covid-19 could make that happen soon?), but
hopefully someone will take over, ideally before this happens.

4. Anyone willing to help maintaining Slint and maybe take it over when

However after setting up debian buster from time to time speakup just drops
and I need to do a service espeakup restart to get it back.
I do know the net inst iso works if you just press s at the boot prompt.
But if you try to get into expert install no speech whatsoever. Or braille

that doesn't seem to be the case.

Its enough to make me want to try slint on this machine. But concerned I
might not be able to figure out what driver controls my wifi card.
So sadly no answer for you. I haven't a clue why speakup is dropping all the
time.
In your case I might be tempted to try a different distro like slint. I am
tempted myself.
The issue I have with distros that pop up with accessibility built in is
eventually the whole distro disappears or the accessibility does.
Anyway. I really hope someone else can provide an answer.
Oh one thing you might want to try is silence speech when it comes up and
just always read the last line. The defaults are usually what you need.
I don't know if that will help or not. But its worth a try to get your debian
system fully installed.

It appears the old Speakup list is long dead.
After several attempts to get somebody at the Debian accessibility email
address to respond I am putting this question out here hoping somebody knows
what is going on.
Up through Debian Jesse Speakup worked great.
After that no matter what hardware configuration or virtual VM-Ware
configuration I try Speakup won't stay talking for more than a few minutes.
It frequently quits during installation of the OS forcing me to start over
and over and over.
Speech just goes dead.
Log entries are no help since there is no log that survives the aborted
install.
Even once I have a full install I don't know where or what to look for to
tell me why speech died.
It seems to be related to how frequently I cause speech interupts by typing
or stopping speech during long output.
All of my Jesse installs continue to work even after updates but of course
that's starting to drop far behind.
The PI isn't an issue for me since I only ssh in to them but I'd like to be
doing that from a more modern version of Debian if possible.
