Your project sounds very interesting. I hope we get a chance to chat about
them. You can certainly set up a raspberry pie on your own. Getting speech
running in the console, sorry, no graphics interface at the moment, is pretty
straightforward especially since you know how to do SSH. I think information
about this is on the website. Someone else can probably shoot you the links.

I am Regina, totally blind since about 1994 and live in Switzerland together
with my sighted partner (who will be my husband in a month ;-)) We both are
techies and tinkerers. I run my own ubuntu server with services like mail,
xmpp/jabber, a groupware and my own cloud system.
In addition I have built a video server using a Raspberry Pi 1. Thanks to
bubbleupmp and minidlna, we can stream the videos from my server to our

Last year I had the idea to make a talking watch for a swimming pool in a
hotel for handicapped guests - as far as I know there is still no waterprove
watch for the blind. For this project we used a Raspberry Py 2.
I work on my Raspbbery Pi via ssh fromm y PC or my ubuntu server. For
setting it up, I first connected it to my notebook using a
usb/serial/adapter and Teraterm. Surely it makes fun working together with
my partner, but it would be a great experience setting up a Pi without
sighted assistance.
