Hello Amanda,
I was just thinking about your options for real-time sharing of the
notes a tutor is writing in a classroom.
I did a search:
apt-cache search chat
And it came up with multiple console and GTK GUI based IRC clients, and
XMPP (Jabber) clients.
So, I think the easiest way to do what you want to do might be to run
either an IRC server or an XMPP server on your network, which students
can then all join and then 'see' notes as they are typed.
Of course the interaction can be bi-directional as well.
I don't know off-hand whether with either IRC or XMPP whether there is a
way of making things filtered, e.g. for students to be able to talk to
the lecturer but not see what other students are typing etc.
If your clinet computers are running a GUI then a multi-pane GTK based
client might be the most accessible option.
