Hi all,
My problem is solved. Some of the procedures that are in Mike's tutorial need to
be altered
http://www.raspberryvi.org/stories/raspbian-lite-mate.html
These procedures relate to setting up alsa and setting the default sound card to
the USB card.
See the second answer at the below link
http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/19705/usb-card-as-my-default-audi
o-device
In addition, go to the following link
http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/39928/unable-to-set-default-input
-and-output-audio-device-on-raspberry-jessie
Follow the steps in the answers and you should be good to go.
The only remaining problem I have is that the quiet parameter appears to be
doing nothing.
I am now going to plugin a keyboard and test.

Subject: [raspberry-vi] Re: Getting error while setting up speakup
Hello Pranav
I don't know what this error is caused by.
I have just written a card with the latest Raspbian Lite and it worked for me.
But...
I am in the middle of changing the way the libilctts library is built so the
current method on the Web site is out of date at the moment.
After getting it from git like this:
git clone http://github.com/cromarty/ttsprojects
Now:
cd ttsprojects/raspberry-pi/libilctts
./configure
./fix-timestamps.sh
make
sudo make install
Should work and make and install the library.
Follow the tutorial for piespeakup because I have not finished the new build
method yet, very nearly there but not quite.
So in ttsprojects/raspberry-pi/piespeakup, run:
sudo ./build.sh
When you reboot it should speak.
Please be patient while I finish the change to the build process and update the
tutorial. Probably later today.
