I am not BT but, you should pair your Bluetooth devices from the console.
The LXDE desktop does not appear to be accessible in terms of the top panel.
Ensure everything is updated
Sudo apt update
Sudo apt upgrade -y
There have been major Bluetooth improvements in the last 2 days such that
Espeak sounds nice over my Bluetooth headphones.
Run sudo bluetoothctl I think.
You then say
Power on
And then say
Agent on
To register the Bluetooth agent
You then say
Scan on
To start the scanning process
This is where things get difficult. Keep track of the device names you hear.
When you hear the name of the device you want to pair, issue the command
Scan off
This stops the scanning.
Review the screen until you find the device name and its address.
Copy the address to your paste buffer and then issue the command
Pair <address>
If you get a confirmation, then issue the command
Trust <address>

to learn how the desktop works. Just two more questions for now: Do you know
how do I get to the section on the desktop where I can switch bluetooth on
and how do I get backk to terminal mode that I can safely shutdown the PI?

I hope this will be useful for someone. Here's an image which is ready to
go.
I kept everything as it comes from Raspberry.org so, you will have to change
the keyboard, country, language time and date, etc.
Write this image to a SD card and you will boot to the command line:
Username: pi
Password: raspberry
If you want to bring up the desktop then type:
Startx
Don't forget to press <insert+enter> after you type "startx" otherwise you
will have speakup also speaking when Orca comes up.
On first boot of the desktop, you will get the setup wizard.
